Julian Bozeman is an artist and arts educator whose work incorporates sound recording, video, performance, and language. Bozeman creates culturally responsive projects in collaboration with communities, emphasizing the interconnectedness of our experiences. He is dedicated to equipping learners of all ages with technical skills and confidence in their art-making and storytelling. His teaching philosophy emphasizes creative risk-taking and exploration, fostering open-mindedness and compassion that extend beyond the studio, all rooted in the shared power of memory and storytelling.

Description: At this professional development workshop, PS018 teaching professionals provided core vocabulary taught in their subjects. Julian and Sarah gathered these words to develop arts integrated curriculum for the school. Julian and Sarah also ran a drawing and letter-writing exercise, emphasizing independence and connection. Following the one-hour workshop, Julian and Sarah combined the voices, poses, drawings, and writings of the teaching professionals into the short sweet vignette below:

Description: Throughout the 5-week summer camp, young artists recorded their voices, performed for the camera, and created individual artworks. The individual artworks were scanned to create the elements and backgrounds of the video. The voices and performances were collaged together on top of the scanned artworks.

Description: Parents and Caregivers of PS018 students submitted โ€œone positive trait that describes your childโ€ in their home language. Their responses became the lyrics to an original song, recorded by the students. Additionally, the students created a collaborative mural and self-portraits, which were compiled into a coffee table book. Each of the 4 parts (mural, self-portrait book, song, video) refer to each other with the positive traits as the consistent through-line. (read more)
